The Close Support (CS) Variant

Although the Matilda had quickly become obsolete in the European theatre, the heavy armour and proven weaponry were found to be perfect to use against the lightly equipped Japanese.

The nature of the terrain alone precluded tanks operating in the large armoured formations experienced in North Africa. Instead, the Australian 4th Armoured Brigade (equipped solely with Matilda II tank variants) was broken up and deployed as individual troops of three tanks in direct support to the infantry and directed to attack fixed Japanese positions.

The Frog Flamethrower Variant

The Matilda Frog was the first version to utilise a pressurised gas to project a flame. This terrifying weapon required a 20-second pause between shots while the pressure built up again, requiring close infantry support to prevent the tank being overrun by the enemy.

The flamethrower makes this tank a considerable addition to your jungle forces, ideal as a counter to any form of infantry tucked up in a fortified position!
