HMS Warspite was one of several Queen-Elizabeth class super dreadnoughts constructed in the 1910s, with Warspite herself being laid down in October 1912, Launched in November 1913 and commissioned in March 1915.

The Queen-Elizabeth class was distinctive in several ways: not only were they the first dreadnoughts of their day to be powered by oil instead of coal, they also mounted powerful 15 inch guns, and boasted a 330mm armour belt, with deck armour ranging from 25mm to 76mm. Superior to many of their peers of the day, and meant ships like Warspite were far from obsolete heading into World War 2, earning the nickname 'grand old lady' and earning more battle honours than any other Royal Navy vessel.

Revolutionary for their time, HMS Warspite enjoyed great success in World War 1, and despite it's mediocre speed of 23 knots, survived damage from shellfire, bombing, accidental ramming, sea mines and a guided missile, while her guns kept her competitive with her younger peers.
